How to legalise a document
We can help you with affidavits, statutory declarations and witnessing of signature(s) on legal documents for use in the United Kingdom, British Overseas Territories and in some Commonwealth countries not represented in Belgium. We can also perform these services for documents originating from the UK, British Overseas Territories and some Commonwealth countries for use in Belgium.
Certificates and certified copies will be issued on the spot provided the correct documentation is submitted.
Notarised documents can be forwarded by registered postage; the fee is € 6.00.
Please note that the Consular Section cannot translate documents.
Legalising documents and obtaining an apostille
Foreign authorities sometimes need official confirmation that a British document is genuine. The legalisation Office at the Foreign Office in London does this, by attaching an apostille. This is a legalisation certificate which confirms that a signature, seal or stamp appearing on a document is genuine. Please note that this service incurs a fee.

The Consular Section can obtain an apostille from the Legalisation Office on your behalf. There is an administrative charge for forwarding the documents, in addition to the legalisation fee (for more information see consular fees)
A bilateral agreement between Belgium and the United Kingdom (signed Brussels 21 December 1928) dispenses with the legalisation of certain official documents (these include birth, marriage, death and divorce certificates). this means that no "Apostille" is necessary. However, a translation may be required.
